I been doing ok hunting and all but was just wondering how i can fight things without them running away so far the only way i can kill something is to first agro it with a slingshot.

Use stomp when you are near them, the range is bigger then you think.

Stomp aggros immediately, though. Is the range really big enough to stun them before they can walk up and interrupt you?

I've noticed sometimes if you time it just right, when you initially use stomp you're out of range so it doesn't aggro them, but then they run into range and you land your stomp and stun them. It'd probably be hard to do consistently though, I like using the slingshot personally, especially for snakes, but if there aren't rocks around then yeah that works and is a little quicker too. (don't do it vs snakes tho )

you can use the slingshot at a farther range and stomp as they come running toward you, but this takes practice.

For people starting out, I would second this is the best way to do it.
