Question about keys?

Can someone please explain to me the difference in the three types of keys and when to use them? I keep reading the wiki over and over and I'm still confused. I can defiantly tell though that getting them mixed up and not fully understanding the differences could be disastrous.

You have a key, you assign lock's with it, you can copy this key then you get a master copy of key.

You can also create a normal copy called slave copy key, you can't be copied this key, but still got acces to all gates.

So the only difference between them is that the master key can be copied, and the slave key can't be copied.

How does one attune a key to an alt? Is there a trick to it since you can't both be logged in at the same time?

Multiple clients/accounts or let the alt KO or something/crime then you can attune it.

How do I know if something is locked? I crafted a lock and key, associated the key to the lock and put the lock on the gate. Does it count as locked now or do I have to actually unlock and lock it every time I leave my homestead?

If it woudn't be locked it would say that the lock hasn't been attached yet, so yes it is locked.

If you aren't safe you can drop/put your keys, and test it afterwards.

Just for reference, if anyone is still unsure, you could take a look at EegoreVids locksmithing tutorial on YouTube.

Probably the easiest way (without leaving scents) is to use another person's claim (who you might not trust with your key). Have your alt stand on his claim, make him revoke permissions for your alt and close the alt's client or use :lo (not :act lo, since you won't actually be logging out). You can now log in on your main character, since the alt cannot log out from a claim he has no permissions on.

You can do this on your own claim too, by having the alt stand in boston, remove his permissions, teleport him to his leanto which is on your main's claim (and on which the alt no longer has permissions), and then continue as above. As soon as you re-enable permissions, the alt will automatically log out again.

FYI, don't forget to give one of your master keys to an alt.

This. Since the original question was formulated differently, I answered with a mechanic to attune keys between characters on the same account. However, this was basically only of importance in closed alpha/beta, where not everyone had two accounts. Currently, with account creation being unrestricted, there is no reason at all not to make a second one, and most everyone should have at least one alt-vault character, if only to hold master copies of all keys of importance. Whatever happens to your main account (death, random loss or theft of keys), you will always be able to enter your gates regardless. The alt does not need any skills to be able to attune the keys, but it might be handy to level him to locksmithing so he himself can create new copies of the keys when required.
