Beginners question about fellow players intentions

Hey I am new to the game. Today a Player did an invitation thing after giving me some meat and fresh hides. I was on Jamestown territory and thought he had the intention to lure me out of city and then kill me. So I walked away with the stuff.
Do you think he wanted to kill me? Don't know how the invitation system works.

At the moment snakes and crickets KO me easily. How does it work when people meat outside the city. Is there always fighting and running zig zag?

If you accept an invite then they get an arrow to where ever you are. He may have wanted to follow you home and raid you.
Don't fight snakes they are poisonous and crickets are too powerful for early characters so just fight rabbits until you are sure you can take them.
Meeting people outside of towns usually involves running, frequently by both people, or hiding behind a wall and talking. If you are a hermit eventually you may find other hermits to be friends with, I have, but trust does not come easy to hermits.
If you want to make friends outside of towns then just be friendly but cautious.

Did he invite you to a party or to make you kin? You can see party members on the map, so he could follow you home.
Kins are like a buddy list, you see when they are online, see their names and can chat privately. He probably wanted to do the latter to give you some free advice for newbies. At least that's what I do sometimes if I see a new player in Boston.
