Takes me a while to get a fire going on my fireplace with a Tinder Drill. Keeps breaking.
Is this the norm? Is it normal to have the tinder drill break multiple times?

Unfortunately it's normal.
"Your tinder drill broke" is the most annoying system message in this game.

However,
Make a fireplace, light it up.
Then make a torch.
Keep the fire going in your fireplace while you are online. When you are about to log off, pick some branches, light your torch and equip it.
Now you have fire next time you log in (torch won't go out) just put branches on your fireplace and light it with your torch.

Later, you can make stove in your accommodation that burns 24 hours.

It is better to use a Flint and Steel. Much more reliable.

To my shame, the stupidest knock-out no.1 in this game was this one time when I tried to light a fire while low on blood. Freck this shiet I hate tinder drill from the bottom of my heart.

Make an alt whose sole purpose in life is to hold a lit torch.

It stays lit while he is offline.

When you need a light, log in on the alt, build a little pile of wood near town (need to go maybe 30 tiles or so away otherwise you get cant build there message) and light it, then log off and log back in on your main with a separate torch and light off the new fire.
