You smelt it you dealt it.
Basically, you leave scents from doing crimes. These are, in order from soonest expiration date, to latest: Trespassing (Going on another player's claim, or looking into containers on someone's claim), Assault (Initiating combat with another player), Battery (Knocking a player out, who you initiated combat with), Theft (Stealing things from someone's claim, or someone), Waste (Destroying things on other peoples claims), and Murder (Killing another player).
Doing each of the aforementioned, leaves an exclamation point on the ground, which you can see by turning on tracking. Right clicking on the exclamation point collects the scents, and puts them in your inventory. You get a dialog box that lets you track to the perpetrator's homestead, the perpetrator, or in the event of theft, to the item that was taken. If you go to their homestead, you can left click the scent in your inventory, right click on their homestead, and click summon. It will bring their character to the homestead if they are in Boston, or offline. In the event of them having no homestead, you can summon them anywhere as long as they are offline or in Boston, and are immediately killed.
If you log out with the dialog box, it will be gone when you log back in. You will still have the scents in your inventory, but they are only good for summoning. The exclamation points on the ground are what you need to collect to track. Scents in the inventory last a lot longer than on the ground. If I remember correctly, Murder is about 9 days on the ground, and 28 days in the inventory. Not sure on the rest. But this means that someone could hide in a stronghold for the time of the ground scents, and then move elsewhere, so you have absolutely no way to track them, and are left with useless inventory scents.
