help with tracking please

so today i found someone had finally stolen something from my completely undefended claim. there were scents everywhere, yet they had also carried several containers off the claim, but not stolen anything out of them. i thought it was weird.
anyway, i decided to track down their claim, and possibly take revenge at some later date once i knew where it was. my first problem was when i tried to accumulate more evidence, almost every time i clicked i would move to where the ! was but not do anything, even when i moved all the objects near it away to make sure there was room for me to stand there. is this normal? i was only able to get 50 charge or so before i gave up in frustration. fortunately, they lived close enough for me to get to without it running out. i could tell from how the needle moved that i was closing in, when my client crashed  and when i logged back in, my tracking window is gone and i can't figure out how to get it back. how do i continue tracking please?

You have to go back and accumulate more. Also, were you trying to pick up the same scent more than once? You can only pick each one once for one tracking session.

Or you can just keep going in the direction you were and hope you find them. I'd recommend not though. It's happened before that people doing that have accused the wrong people.

you mean if i log out or crash anytime i track someone, i have to go back for more evidence??? even if there was charge left?? it isn't like i had any intention of ending my tracking session.
i don't see how that's reasonable!
thanks

It's probably not intended to be reasonable, because it's probably a bug. You should report it. Do a search first, it may have already been reported.

It's a known issue, but no word on whether its a bug or intentional.

There's a good chance you're not going to have enough charges to track the perp down, anyway, unless there's dozens. It's another of those balance issues we're not clear on.
