Regen of strikings

Postby jrsydevil » Sat May 04, 2013 1:51 am

I took strikings of 3 of my 1% pure trees a couple days ago (2 from each).. The trees were Oak, Red Maple, and Grand Maple...

I planted them all at the same time (within 5 min) and they still havent sprouted, so I KNOW it's been less than 3 days...

My Grand Maple is ready for striking again already... is this normal? I thought it took longer for them to regen.

ONLY the Grand Maple has regen'd the strikings so far.. which leads me to wonder if that particular type of tree regens faster... if so.. this is vital information to tree grinders.

it's random. As fast as you've got them is exceptionally lucky. I've had trees not regen saplings for over a month.
It is possible that grand maples regen faster on average though.

IIRC, the way regen on trees worked in H&H was through random decay hits. Grand maples are larger, so they might have a bigger chance of getting hit by such a decay hit, if it's anything like H&H
Did Claeyt shut up yet?

I thought that tree cuttings did not regenerate. I will search the forum for further info, but in the meantime, can anyone provide the source of this change? Thanks

edit to add: It appears that people are reporting regenerating tree cuttings. Mereni mentioned 5 weeks in one thread, and someone else mentioned grand maples regenerating faster than others as well.

Thanks for the info!

Wow yes I can conform it too now! I never believed it but now that I see it on my own claim I am certainly a believer now!

Pity I already chopped my best trees..

Yes it does appear to be random, from a bunch of trees I already took cuttings from only a few had that option again when I checked today. Cool!

On a different but related note:
I took 5 cuttings from different trees for the first time.
Pine, birch, forgot (not maple), and two oak.
Both the oaks became cutesy little trees, the others sticks.
No idea if oaks have more chance of sprouting, just saying.

You can take 2 strikings per tree, did you take 2 strikings the first time?
Also I had trees that were fully grown for weeks that never grew back their cuttings :/
I was under the impression that they never did tbh

When I did my test, I used birch, red maple, and elm. They all took 5 weeks to regen their cuttings, and they all came back at about the same time. I'm pretty sure it's a fixed timer. I'll probably do another test... but it'll be awhile before results come in.

My guess is that you only took one cutting instead of both from the grand maple, but then, I didn't test that species.
