There's actually quite a bit here about it. Sometimes you have to finesse the search engine a bit to get what you want. Google makes it easier, too. I would have sworn there was a wiki page for it, but not finding it myself.

A quick search for "summon*": search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=summon%2A&fid%5B%5D=5

Basically, any time a person commits a crime, a scent is left. This is anywhere from Trespassing on another's claim (town claims don't count unless the action requires "Criminal Acts" on) to murder. Only some of these leave summonable scents, though: Murder,Larceny, Waste, and Assault (if I recall correctly, and witchcraft will whenever it gets added). The basic mechanic is you find evidence and you use the crime scene to accumulate charges to track the perpetrator(s) down. If they are offline, you can track the criminal scum to their homestead. Use the evidence to summon them by picking up the evidence and then right clicking on the ground on/near their homestead. You can then proceed to KO and murder the target. If the target has no homestead, you can summon them at your homestead and they are instantly killed. There's a few more details I'm sure I'm forgetting.

And remember aspiring criminals, Vandalism doesn't leave a scent, so lift stuff off the claim and it's yours to loot!

Does this mean that a player could walk on a pclaim lift an item, carry it off the pclaim and not leave any summonable scents? I take it they would still leave scents which their homestead or their online character could be followed, right?

How long do trespass scents last? About 8 hours.

If you follow a player with scents and they log out, will the scents lead you to their logout point, or will they simply stop pointing to that player?

Depends on the crime. Trespassing is the shortest at only a few hours (8 if I recall) and goes upwards of about 9 days for murder. The evidence you collect lasts even longer. Evidence from a murder lasts 90 days.

Hum, can you answer one more thing?

The scents are avaible for anyone take it and track or just for the claim owner? Its "infinite"? (a guy already take it and another come and take it too)

Anyone can track any scent and you can swap evidence.

The best suggestion for hiring a "ranger" is to track the perp's homestead yourself and tell the ranger where exactly it is and give them the evidence to summon with. Tracking is a long, tedious process, though.
