Effects of Water Purity: Research!

Postby Hans_Lemurson » Sat Apr 06, 2013 2:50 am

I have done some tests on the effects that water and other ingredients have in crafting new materials:

Milk of Lime
17.23/32.15/17.46/33.17 Lime
16.02/34.23/25.06/24.68 Water_1

16.03/34.21/25.00/24.77 Milk of Lime (1:100)

Conclusion: Water has 100x the weight as the Lime. Lime purity does not matter.
----
Baking
21.04/43.35/19.99/15.63 Flour
15.83/34.26/26.21/23.70 Water-2

18.44/38.81/23.11/19.66 Pie Dough (1:1) 35 Flour, 75 Water
18.44/38.81/23.11/19.66 Oatmeal Cracker (1:1) 25 Flour, 75 Water

Water Purity affect baked goods like it always did, except now it's not a flat 25. Water exists as a single ingredient.
----
Limed Hides
31.41/38.41/14.18/16.00 Hide-1
30.85/36.30/13.49/19.36 Hide-2
16.03/34.21/25.00/24.77 Milk of Lime

23.73/36.31/19.59/20.38 Limed-Hide-1 (1:1)
23.45/35.26/19.24/22.06 Limed-Hide-2 (1:1)

Milk of Lime and the Dried Hides combined in equal strength, just as in all Crafting Recipes.
----
Tanning Fluid
31.41/38.41/14.18/16.00 Brain-1
15.93/33.98/29.56/20.53 Water-3

16.66/34.19/28.83/20.32 Tanning Fluid 5% (1:20)

30.85/36.30/13.49/19.36 Brain-2

17.34/34.29/28.10/20.27 Tanning Fluid 10% (1:20)

The contents of the Bucket, whether Water or 5% Fluid, have 20x more weight in the combination than the Brain.
Brain Purity is largely irrelevant.
---
Leather

23.73/36.31/19.59/20.38 Limed-Hide-1 (1:1)
23.45/35.26/19.24/22.06 Limed-Hide-2 (1:1)

17.34/34.29/28.10/20.27 Tanning Fluid 10%
15.80/34.24/27.51/22.46 Water-4

23.73/36.31/19.59/20.38 Leather-1
23.45/35.26/19.24/22.06 Leather-2

Leather Purity is IDENTICAL to that of the Limed Hide. Tanning Fluid has NO EFFECT
-----------------
For the two "Fluids" water vastly outweighs and overpowers them in purity effect.
The worst-case scenario of putting a 0/33/33/33 Brain into 100/0/0/0 water only results in 95/1.6/1.6/1.6, which is has an 8.89x multiplier.

Water is by and large THE MOST IMPORTANT INGREDIENT. Given the interactions with clay and clay pots, it will likely be the linchpin of purity grinding.

update: Harvested my leather, so that info is added.

This is great research! Thank you! I am excited to see that lime quality is irrelevant for Milk of Lime. That should make getting good clay a little easier.

Yes it is a bit unnerving just how monumental water purity value is right now. Means the key to everything is finding and controlling a source of high purity water.

Hopefully with updates to wells which allow you to grind purity water that will mitigate such concerns.

BTW I produced some leather with adjusted purity tanning solution and all I got was 0% pure leather. The hide was pre-patch 0% pure as well.

Also note tumbleweeds have no purity when found in wild while stuff like old logs and seashells do...

An item can be "0% Pure" for element values ranging from 25 to 32. What was the elemental composition of your leather?
We'll get definitive answers in a bit though, since I'm about to go check my leather that's been tanning over night.

--------------

Ok, checked my leather and it is identical to the Limed Hides. Neither the Tanning Fluid nor the Tub have any effect on the leather's purity.

I posted this in another thread in CH subforum, but I guess it really belongs here:

Test 1: 1 piece of 4% pure lime 34.06/33.44/16.47/16.03 + 1 bucket of 9% pure water (47.02/14.09/23.21/15.09) gives 9% pure milk of lime (46.88/14.27/23.10/15.75).
This gives me 9% pure clay (46.88/14.27/23.10/15.75)

Test 2: 1 piece of 4% pure lime and 10 buckets of 9% pure water, exact same alchemy values as above gives
9% pure milk of lime (47.00/14.11/23.19/15.72).
This milk of lime can no longer be used for making clay, as it used to. Milk of lime gained a concentration value, like tanning fluid.

So it's no use making those barrels of milk of lime that way any longer.
And lime purity barely influences clay output. Water is much more important here.

With 3% pure granite and 4% pure lime it only makes 3% pure planting pots (37.70 salt) though, so it seems clay does not really contribute much there :(
With 2% pure granite I got 37.69 salt pots, with 1% granite I got 37.63 salt pots. Odd. Pot quality comes out lower than lime purity, which suggest granite matters quite a bit, while the very minor difference between 1,2 and 3% granite suggest it doesn't really matter that much.
Did Claeyt shut up yet?

Interesting. When I added 0% lime to a 6% bucket of water the result was 5% milk of lime. When you say you got 9% clay was that from a clay trough?

Have you tried making kiln with that clay and cooking a few bricks with 0% clay to see if it alters purity?

This is my best discovery, and I have spent hours and hours exploring and losing a couple of buckets in the process ;)

Besides this high sulphur water I havent found water with other alchemies that come close - maybe mid to upper 30s.

Also I dont check much foraged items as they are kind of a hassle but I think the highest purity I found in them is like 5%.
