An Omen?

Hello, about a week old newb here.
Iv been wondering around and iv noticed something that kinda bothers me. I find alot of abandoned bases. At least double the amount of functioning bases I find. And they are usually not much bigger than mine, land wise. They do tend to have a better wall up, (stone vs my wooden).

So im wondering, are they abandoned because they was raided or did they quit playing and when the claim ran out scavengers picked it clean?
Does the Jamestown server have a large raider problem?

It's very likely they got raided and quit, or just quit and the claim went dead.

Don't make yourself a target, do not leave scents.

Make your claim appear poor and a hassle to break into. Place focus on braziers. Walls are not a 'deterrent' to raiders like braziers are and the appearance that nothing of value is on your claim.

All of your theories for why they are empty are possible. Also they may have just wanted to move, switched server to play with friends... etc etc etc.
Jamestown has much less raider problems than the other two servers, but there will always be raiders, especially if you are easy to raid.
Why make an effort when somewhere else is easier. The plan is to be the harder one, but you will never stop it completely.
The more affluent your base looks the more likely it is to be raided, so keep it simple until you are able to put in good defences.
Although then they will wonder what the hell you are trying to protect so well... lol... so its swings and roundabouts.
Basically use everything you can as soon as you can and dont stockpile stuff, better you use it than a raider, and there will always be more to find.
Best of luck and enjoy your time in Salem :D

A personal claim is very easy to maintain with very little upkeep, basically dropping silver on the stone, firstly, and lastly, if it were raided, the more active players have learned to move-on, have alts for everything so that moving is easy and re-establishing oneself is effortless.

except for the digging.
I hate digging.

Abandoned bases are generally a very nice place to be for very fresh players.
However, the chief put it pretty nicely (looking for quote)

found the quote:
