Water ?

Is it possible to dig next to a water source (river/lake ... ) and that tiles then fills with water ? ( i wanted to do this but didnt tried yet )
... it would be nice to create a moat or a channel to connect two rivers...

2 ) Oh another question - does anybody know what is in the east - is there land beyond the sea or some islands?
