Rules on squatters

Hello, I'm about 4-5 days old now, and I found this huge wall (triple walls) that span a good distance on the far side is a hole that I can enter, from the looks of the place it was going to be a town but was raided before the walls got up. There doesnt seem to be any claims, personal or city any where. and there are some really advanced looking houses and stuff all over the place. And LOTS of urns.

Iv learned that the red-er something is the more damaged it is and that things decay over time if not on a claim. so I'm guessing this place was ruined long ago.

Tho I dont know how to use most of the stuff in this place, nor can I seem to open any of the gates. Would it be a faux pas to claim some of this as my own and move into one of these nice houses?

its entirely fine. just consider theese 2 things:

A)seemingly destroyed by a raid. Hostilities are never good right?

B) the former owners might return and not like the squatter much.

If you believe you can succeed in claiming it and making it your own, then by all means do so!

Doing so is EXTREMELY dangerous. You do not know who hit that claim and/or why it is abandoned. As such you don't know who/if/when the person who hit it will be coming back. one of the biggest mistakes a player can make is to underestimate how valuable it is to live in a location that nobody yet knows about.

Its a bad idea to settle in it , better to settle outside that town even if its just nearby.

1) You can't open the doors bcos is has a lock on it & the previous owner holds the keys.
2) Since u are only 5 days , i assume you can't even scratch the stone wall let alone destroy the wall . in other word, if someone were to repair the hole in the wall, you will be locked in.

I would suggest build outside the town , if u really want to build inside , wait till u can destroy the gate , then build ur own gate & lock/key.
best to find a place when u can see forest, grassland & a river/lake for the materials you will need , of course u can roll alts to gather materials that u need from other part of the maps. For water , u can always carry a few buckets & port to boston to get it. :D

Note : Best to build ur home next to a mine as you can store movable items inside the mine , this save up space above the surface = save silver on space upkeep ;) . Use Woo Woo Wand to find the minepoint & settle beside it but remember not to build anything on top or 1 tile from the minepoint so u can build a mine in the future. Woo woo wand can find a lot more mines than Rods but the down side is you will not know what purity the ore mines is until u build one to get the ore but since u just need it for storage space & normal iron bars for nails , its ok. As for lime , hope there is a lime quarry nearby or u can roll an alt char to settle near a lime quarry or u can smelt iron without using lime.
I just found 8 minepoints near my home last nite with a woo woo , & 3 of them is only 20 tiles distance from each other.

Thanks for all the advice, I do plan on being a miner/blacksmith but as of yet Im cant even get leather for that wand (I assume deer can give leather and the one I attacked dropped me like I was nothing.)
For now I think I will just setting a little ways from this place.

You could buy one from players, they're not that expensive

You can buy leather from players or player's stall , u will need 2 leather , 1 singing log & grass i think to get the wand . For now u can just settle in a small claim & find the mine later or if you are lucky you might find an abandon unclaim mine. there is a few abandon unclaim mines near where my home is since i built them & left unclaim cos of low purity then my claim mine . :D & since i found another 8 minepoints last nite , i guess there will be another 8 unclaim mines to choose from soon if u are in jamestown . muwahahaha

Oh and animal only drop hides , not leather . To make leather u need a tanning tub & brains drop from beavers , deers or bears. You need lime to to make a limed hide before putting into the tanning tub

Oh dear, seems im farther away from mining than expected. Maybe I will just buy the leather. I know this is kind off topic, but I dont understand purity other than the more pure the better. But as to how to increase it is unknown to me. Iv been watching several tutorial l videos, tho most are from closed beta they are still useful, but nothing on purity so far. Even the wiki doesnt seem to explain how to increase purity only shows how it makes things better. If any one knows of a place that explains how to increase it a link would be very useful.
