How do you manage to hit a critter/animal using punch?

You used to be able to just walk up to a critter and whack him but two updates ago they made it so they run away from you.
The solution is to either use the new slingshot they added to fire at them from range which then prompts them to fight you or if you have backalley pugilism you can stomp them when you are close to them - use Wander mode to walk faster so you can gain ground on them. If your stomp is triggered within range then they fight you as normal
