Forestry Data Gathering

I'm starting this thread to record success rates of the Forestry skill. With 50 proficiency points in Frontier & Wilderness, Stocks & Cultivars and Natural Philosophy I struck and planted 50 cuttings, all of which were from Maple or Grand Maple trees.

Sunday morning I'll return with my counts. In the mean time if anyone else has some specific data points they'd like to share please do so.

Thanks!

I have the following.
Frontier: 37
Stocks: 40
Natural: 35

So far I have planted 18 saplings of various types. 2 saplings are still potted. I've only had 3 saplings take and they were 2 maple and 1 birch.
My plan is to wait for these last 2 saplings to grow and then plant all saplings at once to get a better view of the statistics.

Edit: I just realized I probably should've divided the skills by 100. *fixes issue*

I'm curious about this too so I will contribute some data.

My Natural Philosophy has been at 50 the whole time I have been planting trees. My Stocks are higher than 100 and well leave it at that and my Frontier was at about 35 when I started planting and about 50 right now. I am about to start farming a lot more trees and will update once that happens but have done about 15-20 runs of 6 trees at a time with basically every single time giving me 3 successes and 3 fails. Usually 3 trees and 3 sticks but an occasional Sunflower has appeared too but always 3 sticks and 3 successes.

I am in the process of raising all my skills and aloso starting a much larger forestry endevour and will let everyone know how that goes.

If you really want to contribute to helping figure out a formula for this, you'll need to post specific numbers. Besides, what harm is there in giving away Proficiency values? It's not like humors that will count for/against you in combat if someone knows. (I understand the paranoia, and have been there myself, but one must always remember to keep it in check and only be paranoid about "reasonable" things, such as the cops hiding in the trees down the block. :P )

Right, for the best results we need exact proficiency values at the time of striking and potting, and we need large runs (at least 20 at a time). But really anything will help us get a feel for what to expect. All data is welcome :D

Ok Ok... Honestely I was kinda joking because lots of players won't give out their S&C but it would have been from 100- 130. I started planting trees at 100 and it's currentely at 130. But seriously 95% of the time I get 3 succsses and 3 sticks and 2.5% I get 4 successes and 2.5% I get 2 successes...

I havent been keeping real statistics so this is a guesstimate but it has been insane because I read on the forums that people seem to have much bigger variances. anyway today I am making some pots and will be doing a slightly larger scale tree farm and will keep real stats starting then. I love stats.

I will post some data when I get back to planting.

I got so burnt out on trees I am on hiatus.

Regardless I am having a hard time believing these reports of 75% success rates with 150 stocks.

The results are in :D With 50 points in F&W, NP and S&C, out of 50 pots planted, I got 20 saplings, 27 sticks and 3 beaming-proud sunflowers. I'm not sure what relation the sunflowers have to the success rate. Because I am interested in sustainable forestry, I am going to count the sunflowers as failures because they did not result in a new tree.

So that leaves us with 20 successes and 30 failures for a 40% success rate.

I am going to plant another round at these same proficiency levels and see what happens.

Results are in for the next round. Out of 50 pots I got 21 saplings, 1 sunflower and 28 sticks for a 42% success rate. I've been preoccupied with other goals and have not raised my skills any. I may wait a while before doing another round.

Someone mentioned sunflowers previously and counting them as failures. I believe sunflowers are completely random, and I could be mistaken on this, but probably shouldn't be counted at all. If you plant 50 get 26 successes, 23 failures, and a sunflower, it should instead be counted as 49 plantings. Until we can determine that the sunflower always comes with a failure or always comes with a success, it's the only way to eliminate a bit more random factor from the computations.
