Reclaiming stolen items

Two questions:

-How do you go about tracking down items which were stolen from you? I know the homestead of the guy who took my sled, but was not able to do anything about it at the time and the scents are all gone (or sniffed up by me) Is there a way to track down stolen items using only "evidence of larceny"?

-Does stealing back an item that was stolen from you leave a larceny scent?

Use the larceny scent at the scene of the crime. It has an option to track the item. (try logging out/in to refresh scents) although larceny scents do have a short life spawn.

Stealing back an item is considered a crime even if it was originally yours.

The scents on the ground are already gone. I used them to find the base of the perpetrator, and enough time has passed that even the un-used scents on the ground have vanished. All I have are 3 pieces of "Evidence of Larceny" and one very old (preceeding this crime) "Evidence of Waste".

Are either of these of any use whatsoever?

Yup, you can use them to summon the criminal into the game to murder him. You have to break into the base and get to the leanto though, unless the perp is stupid enough to have a claim homesteaded.

Do note that even the evidence has a shelf life of about 10x the length of time the original scents. Don't sit on it too long. You can always trade it off to someone else that can break in for you.
