Pilgrim's Hovel

I am trying to build a pilgrim's hovel and it keeps saying "Cannot build that here". I have dug and flattened the land and I'm not sure what is required of the land before I can build this. Any advice?

Make sure you have enough space for it. Most players make the mistake of not leveling a large enough area. Extend an extra tile in each direction and everything should work.

Okay. I apparently didn't have enough space so now it's saying the ground is not flat enough but I cannot really tell which part I need to lower. Is there an easy way to tell land elevation?

Get Ender's Client and use the CTRL+L tool. Ender's Client can be found here.

No, CTRL + L
Also, holding CTRL while digging forces the tile to turn out completely flat.
