If you mean what do you need to do to get the yellow alchemical property (forget which it is off top of my head), you need to feed it items that have that property. Humus is merely the average of the items used to fuel the bin.

The color that the purity text is displayed in is based on the dominant element for that item, with total equality showing as Red for Salt, the 1st element.

Composts operate on a strict 1-to-1 "What goes in, comes out" principle. If you feed it organic materials that have an elevated Lead content (yellow), then the compost will be lead-high and its purity text will display as yellow. Do note that all of the unprocessed material in the Compost's fill-meter get averaged together.

Something else important is that unless you're actually achieving high levels of purity, the color DOES NOT MATTER. Something with 26.11 Mercury will show up as green, but will be functionally identical to something with 25.74 Sulphur.

Unless you plan to use it as an ingredient with other purity items -- keeping all purities same will result in purity end product right?

Elemental compositions are averaged whenever ingredients are mixed. Combining two things with 30.00 mercury will result in a final product with 30.00 mercury.

Mixing two items which are rich in two different elements results in a product that is mediocre in both of them.
