So, I've just started making hardened defenses at my base, and I started putting a stone wall around my "core" 24x24 area when I read on the wiki that the zone of overlap for braziers is just under 23 tiles.

If I put a brazier at each corner of the 24x24 area, will they suffer an interference penalty? There would only be 22 squares between each brazier, but if you measured the distance from center-to-center of each brazier, that's a 23 tile difference which is just larger than the reported brazier-range. Is this spaced enough to avoid damage penalties, or will there be overlap?

i thought it was just a diminishing return on the damage, so the more the merrier, until a certain point.
unles im misunderstanding you and you are talking about brazier range?

I have a limited amount of iron and so want to get the most "bang for my buck". If braziers placed at the corners overlap with their neighboring corners, then each one will have two overlaps and be at 70% effectiveness. If not, they will be at 100% effectiveness.

If I start to include more braziers, then potentially each brazier could get interference from ones on the other side of the area, causing a damage penalty for no benefit, unless I stagger them properly. I want to know if this fortified area is 1 tile too small before I complete the stone wall around it.

The diminishing returns is based on the number hitting a character. If there's only one firing at a character, they'll take the full (pitiful) damage of one brazier. If you don't have the iron for more than that, you may be better off building dozens of torchposts and replacing them as you get more iron. Just remember that mixed torchposts and braziers do more damage than just torchposts, but not as much as all braziers, and there's a balance point at which you should just get rid of any remaining torches. Maths are required!

inside of the 24x24 area I would put 1 brazier every tile along the wall, except in front of the gates of course.

Would you then be unconcerned with being able to repair walls from the inside, or am I missing something?

The point is if you have enough braziers 99% of the roaming raiders will not attack your walls. The braziers have chance to crit making them rather unpredictable, and they also have a chance to do permanent damage to your biles.

Ok, now THAT is useful information!

So this means that if you have one brazier just 3 tiles North of another, that it will deal full damage to an attacker to the north of it until they come in range of both? And if you have two braziers which are quite far apart, and a hostile stands in the small area that their ranges overlap, they will take the fire from both, but at 83% (1/1.2) effectiveness?

My maths tell me that if you have a Brazier and a Torchpost paired together, that despite the lower damage value of Torchposts, the overall change to BB output increases (3 for singleton brazier, 3.33 for Brazier/Torch pair). I assume the n in the diminishing returns equation ( 1/(0.2n + 1) ) is for the number of additional braziers rather than the total number (which would be a bit silly for lone braziers to have a penalty)?

Has anyone tried mass torchposts?

Is it just me or is leather harder to come by for it than 4 iron bars for a brazier?
