Attacking Animals, Can't Agro

I've been pulling my hair out today trying to agro passive animals. Rabbits and deer specifically. All they do is run away from me. I can't hit them with a punch (even when it looks like I was close enough and in the right direction). I've also tried Stomp, which I read somewhere agro'ed as soon as you started it, but that's not working either.
A few days ago I killed four rabbits no trouble. they didn't seem to run from me then.
What am I doing wrong? Any hints or tips? I've searched everywhere and can't seem to find this particular topic covered.

Do you have small/big game hunting on that character?

Read the patchnotes. Animals run now. The solution is the newly added slingshot, which lets you aggro animals and proceed to kill them exactly as you did before, with the added bonuses of giving up the first real hit, getting to carry rocks on you any time you suspect you might encounter an animal you want to kill, and the joy of spending extra time trying to line up a shot with a finicky piece of junk that cost you only 5 plant fiber to make.

There's nothing wrong with you, there was just an update recently which modified ranged attacks and made animals skittish. How they expect new players to hunt is beyond mortal understanding, but it is what it is for now.
It is however more "realistic", despite the fact that you can't set up traps or snares of any kind.
Anyways, if you are really quick on your stomp, you CAN aggro them, but it's very tricky. They even dodge Bullruns.
Fortunately the Devs added the "Slingshot" which can be made from wood and plant fibers, although it seems to use entire fist-sized stones from your inventory to do almost no damage at all. However, it DOES transform small timid animals into furry murder-machines, which is what you wanted anyways, but you no longer have the element of surprise and they are jumpy bastards.

Aiming is no problem. You dont have to line up. Just use your left mousebutton and clik the shortcut "shoot". Then click on the animal. Animal comes to you as it did after your first hit did before the patch.

^ Announcements.
Secondary question. Has the behaviour of bears and snakes changed too? I walked past 2 snakes earlier and they didn't seem to flee nor want to attack me. I saw a bear too but was too close to a camp to want to find out if they too flee.
Also, aiming is not the problem. Hitting on hilly land is. I missed the same rabbit twice because I seemed to be on a slightly higher altitude than the rabbit.

Hello,
did anyone manage to find out Slingshot prerequisites ? If I am not wrong, this is the only way for new players to hunt small animals.
After getting the slingshot, what's the correct procedure to shot stones ?

had a bear outside my place last night and i can comfirm it runs away for like 1-2 seconds then attacks so maybe it could be the same with the snakes.
p.s. before the latest patch you could still allmost walk on a snake without it attacking and sometimes they attacked from 10 squares away so could be the same with em running away

i would guess the slingshot is tied to small game hunting
