Dowsing Rod Purity: Does the element matter?

If the Rod you're using is Mercury-Pure, would it ignore a Salt-pure mine of comparable purity value?

If this is the case, then that means that when looking for high-purity mines, not only are you looking for rarer deposits, but you're ignoring 3/4 of the ones that exist. If not, then you're merely looking for things which are statistically rarer.

I suspect that it's element-based, but I do not know. All I know is that my woo-woo wand has found 8 different mines, and my 10/10/40/40 Dowsing Rod hasn't found anything.

It is purity based. A rod very high in mercury, will find other mines high in mercury. I don't know for sure, but I think it's +/- 10% for each of the four values. So, while you're searching, you'll only find nodes who's purity values all fall within those ranges for all four of the elements on your rod. That's why it's so hard to find higher purity mines.

Ok, so it is element-based.

Does this mean that you are locked into a single elemental purity for trying to find higher and higher tier nodes? Would it make sense to try to get your hands on a variety of dowsing rods that are pure in different elements, or is that too much bother?

Yeah, pretty much locked into whatever element you start with. Purity matters because of the lockets, but right now the element you're purifying makes no difference. Maybe in the future an iron bar with purity will craft into something that is different depending on if your highest element was salt or mercury or whatever, but for now I'd say it's too much bother. In fact, iron of about 16% purity will make lockets that easily get you to murder level in your cloak and dagger so there's not even much point in going above that.

My backyard mining node gives me 13% purity Ore, so I'm not too concerned about going searching just yet.

Thank you for the info.
