do buildings decay ?

I have settled in a previous player camp (most probably departed as there's no claim anymore), for a while now, and have started added buildings to it, with no claim yet myself.
However i discovered today that one of them is missing : a drying frame i had build probably 4 or so days ago.
Nothing else seem to be missing so i don't think ti was destroyed by another player.
So ... is this susceptible to happen again (i lost 2 hides that were drying) ? is there anything to be done to prevent it ?

Yes, anything NOT on a claim with paid upkeep will decay. Decay is random and mostly unpredictable. Items that are decaying start taking on a red tone before finally breaking and disappearing. Anything that is reddish from decay can be repaired with the "Repair" command in the Adventure menu.

thanks for the quick reply
guess that makes starting up quite harder, as that first claim is quite expensive

Until you get a claim, you don't want to keep more than a couple of containers around, anyway, as anyone wandering by will want to look and possibly help themselves. Just make sure you have a block or two in your inventory and use the repair command every day. If the lean-to took any damage from decay, it will be fixed.
Bit of newbie help only somewhat related: you can store two containers in the lean-to if you lift them up and then right click the lean-to. It's not guaranteed protection, but anyone wanting to take something will require the theft skill and leave summonable evidence of a crime.

It would be nice if this were stated in one of the guides. I just lost my first smelter and don't have enough iron bars to build another one. Back to Cricket-a-Gedon for me

yea its only stressed out to get a claim in sevenless's guide but i dont see anything about decay.
but again if you didnt have a claim, it could have been destroyed by a random wanderer anyways.

I've been wondering, what happens to boats that take "damage" when they reach zero? Do they stop working, or do they disappear while boating? Thanks!
