How useful is a makeshift fence?

How much protection does a makeshift fence give? I know they can get torn down quite easily, but my understanding is that if they are on your property, they cannot be destroyed without a "Waste Claim".
If I have my property surrounded by these cheap fences and have locks on all the gates, then am I safe from everybody who can't or doesn't want to make a Waste Claim ? I'd build a stone wall, but I'm still expanding my claim and am desperately short on Lime.

Not much at all. Waste claims are only for villages

You need to put up a village bell for this theory to be correct.

for criminals to break it down and enter your claim they would require a 'high-level' skill known as Waste. So at the start of a new world I can see them being very useful. Crimes of waste can be committed on a pclaim without the need of a waste claim. Only a town and all claims within them would require a waste claim in order to commit crimes of waste.

Oh, ok thanks. I'll get to work on making proper defenses then!
