I died.. can I find my corpse and loot it?

Is there such a mechanic? A snake killed me and I had a bunch of stuff. If I trek out to where I died, will there be a corpse to loot?

Yes. You can go retrieve all the stuff that was in your inventory. You did not actually die though, you were merely "knocked out" (although the way a KO plays out in Salem is similar to "death" in other games).

Had you died, it would have been because another player murdered you, and you would need to create a new character.

Oh wow ok, how often do players kill others? Should I take any precautions? Should I rush my "player defense" skill right now?

Murders are rare, and are only done by players that a newbie has no chance of surviving against. The "Cain & Abel" skill required to perform a coup d'grace on a KO'd opponent is fairly expensive (6,000 Cloak and Dagger), so anybody who has it will also have mid to high stats.

"Self Defense" is useful since it gives you your first combat moves, but if you don't have the Yellow Bile to back up your attacks, then you won't do much of anything. At ~10 humours, if you don't know what you're doing, crickets and rabbits will beat the crap out of you. I didn't start winning against wildlife until I had Backalley Pugilism. An Uppercut with 15 YB will one-hit a rabbit, and the "stomp" attack is AoE which can be useful if you have trouble aiming your strikes against randomly hopping critters (but do be aware that your Stomp can be interrupted).

Murders are actually common, and there are no consequences against the majority of players that have been playing since this world started last october/november and have near max humors, etc. Those skilled murderers will easily 1 or 2-shot player settlers without consequence.

Jorb is trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the unsuspecting, almost sociopathic-like, and present this false sense that there is an environment that is not grief-like, but the environment is grief-like. Just saying it is, whether or not one thinks it's an engaging and community encouraging sandbox environment is not for me to pass judgement on, but the community will respond by either remaining or leaving.

First you are clueless

There are no max humors.

No one can 1 shot noobs after taking a summon.

Fact is people need to get off their ass and start tearing down walls instead of crying about the game being unfair.

Haters gonna hate.... If there isn't a consequence for a murder, it's cause you're too lazy or too scared to create one.

I played Haven for well over a year and never got murdered until I got in a stubborn streak and got stupid. I think my brother, who played for over six months, was only murdered once, and he's too bullheaded to stand down and do the "smart" thing. (Didn't help I was sitting next to him egging him on.... shame on me! )

There are those here that will kill on sight, and others that will just knock you out and rob you of what you're carrying (and maybe your pants). Others will break in and steal your stuff and maybe trash the place a for the effort, but if you negotiate, they might just walk away without doing any significant damage. Yet others demand you pay "insurance" so that they won't come in and wipe your settlement out.

That's still only a percentage of the population, though. I'd say a majority of the players here are looking to farm or craft and for mutual defense in times of trouble.

Also to note, all those things that were in your inventory would have ended up on the ground. If another player doesn't pick them up within a few minutes, they will despawn. Some only take a minute or two, others will last several minutes.

There are also some items which disappear when dropped on the ground, like earthworms (and fish on the beach). Also, anything dropped in water is a goner.

Why did you tell this guy he will leave a corpse to loot? When you get KOed, you don't leave a lootable corpse to run back to.

All your stuff will drop on the ground and will stay there for a few minutes. I think the max is 15. If you can get back there in time, you might be able to pick things up.
