What's the point?

What's the point of this game? A good sandbox game design should have a variety of short term, medium term, and long term goals. So what are my goals in this game besides leveling up my skills?

Am I just building a sand castle so some bully can come along and have the pleasure of smashing it? I really am not getting the point of this game.

You can explore the wilderness.

You can make things to sell or trade for other items.

You can join or establish a village and play with others.

You can establish a claim and build things on it, including defenses against raiders.

You can get strong enough to make a raiding character (recommended to make one separate from your farmer) and attack people.

Or a number of other things, but those are the main ones most people do.

You can play farmville if you want. Just make sure you concentrate on your defenses first, to deter any random 'bullies' from messing with your stuff.

I'm not sure you get the idea. The point is that the world is yours to shape and do with as you please. If you want to build a sand castle go for it. If you want to spend your days wrestling bears and chatting it up with people, then do that. If you want to spend your days as a hobo living in an abandoned cave who sells junk to his neighbors, then there you go. I don't know what's fun for you.
