Question for hermit farmers

Postby Jaunt » Mon Feb 25, 2013 11:26 pm

How do you all protect your fields, and how big of an operation are you willing to admit to? Having them all claimed would become prohibitively expensive, I imagine, but walls without a claim and braziers aren't going to do too much. On the other hand, losing a significant fraction of your crops isn't so bad as long as you weren't depending on those seeds. So what's your strategy for farming while not behind someone else's walls?

Use more lime to plenty the fields to get more bang for your buck on your real estate.

Having a hermitage is quite hard and you will never be safe enough, in the most cases a stone wall and some braziers will keep you safe for a long time.

Make a alt where you stack your high purity seeds so the loss won't be that big.

And If you really want to have a safe feeling, try to keep your base small (under 1500m2) for example: a 1500m2 claim with around 30 braziers is quite safe and will keep the most people out your claim.

Only hermitages with over 80 braziers, and several walls ( 5 +) are a challenge against the hardcore raiders in the game.

Basically what Jwhitehorn is saying. If you do need/can build more fields, keep the tiered ones inside your walls. You can have some cabbage or cereal fields outside your defences, if they're just used for consumption.

When you say hardcore raider, Judaism, do you mean roaming loners with endgame humours, or are you referring exclusively to organized groups? Because I've never expected to be able to guard against a city coming after me, my primary defensive strategy is to be too poor, too far away, and not piss anyone off. I'm just looking to make myself not a target of opportunity.

Yeah, in this case just a wall and a few braziers will keep you safe for much people and as long your base isn't shining (Townhouse etc) they most likely won't give it a try

Yeah, don't look tempting is good camoflage. I don't have more than a farmhouse, which is plenty of room for cabinets for a hermit. You don't need all that many fields if you are not trying to build up a high humor alt for raiding, and a little lime goes a long way.

Contrary to what a lot of people say about walls, I think loading up on a ton of walls and braziers is not the best defense. Two wide spaced walls with a few braizers in between and not looking rich is the best defense in my opinion.

The reasons I think so are if you are defenseless, anyone will come after you so you need a little defense, but if you load up on the defenses, you look like you're protecting something important and trying to be a big player too and the big players will knock it all down just to keep you from getting as strong as them. If you have modest defense and don't look rich, the raiders of your server will probably go after the easy targets and the threats and leave you alone.

It depends on how many fields you are planning I guess. As a hermit 8 fields are enough to get by and still look unimportant, like Mereni talks about. If you add much more then yes, it will be costly.
I also don't think joining a village will change much. You'll just attract a larger group of raiders.

Just settle far away from anyone. Keep them seeds safe as they get better. Dont build walls. Dont build braziers. They are just a waste time and resources. If people come by: log out and hope they dont destroy your place. If they do; rinse and repeat. Hire some people to track the perp if you feel like it. (And can afford it.) Move away, start anew. Build your char and join someone else if you care or keep being a hermit. In this game you really cant be killed if you pay attention and dont do crimes.
