Leanto disappeared (but camp only slightly pilfered?)

When I logged on today, I found that my leanto was gone (am just about to buy some land) and some simple food (mushrooms, berries) was gone from a box.

This puzzled me greatly, since I would have expected significantly more damage had I been raided, but all my valuables were still there, even the ones I'd stowed into the now-defunct leanto.

I understand you need a non-trivial amount of proficiencies to be able to destroy a claimed leanto, but the level of damage to my camp doesn't seem to reflect a skilled-up raider wandering the wilds (unless they were just really hungry for waxing toadstools). Do leantos disappear on their own?

Yeah, even if it's your homestead, it can disappear on it's own if it's not on a pclaim. And if there was no pclaim, anyone could have wandered by and eaten all your food but not wanted your stuff.

Yeah, it was not yet on claimed land, but it had only been standing for about a week. It's a little too much of a coincidence between the disappearance of my foodstocks and the destruction of the leanto, so my suspicion is leaning towards the leanto getting smashed by a raider.

However I'm still puzzled by the minimal damage done to my encampment. Then again, I suppose there's no reason to destroy everything in sight if all you're doing is grabbing all the yummy stuff that you can use on your journey (or perhaps you plan to return? :( ).

Do you think it's more likely that I've served as a small snack to a raider with the "Waste" skill, or that a nearby noob gluttoned a few levels of humours and my claimed leanto vanished of it's own accord?

Also: what happens if your leanto is gone and you port to Boston?

You can turn on 'tracking' to see if there's a waste scent where your leanto was. Don't port to Boston without building a new leanto or putting down the claim you said you were going to put down and checking the 'make homestead' box in the claim stone interface. If you port to Boston without a homestead, you'll have no home to go back to and you'll have to walk back to where you want to settle.

Good thing I rebuilt my leanto before heading to Boston to cash my crickets and buy my writ, even if it became obsolete shortly thereafter.

How long to tracks last? It's been many hours and I've been to Boston and back in the meantime. Will I still be able to examine the terrain for traces of evidence? That's what "toggle tracking" does, right?

---------

Ok, turning tracking on yielded evidence of both Larceny and Waste. The evidence pointed to a claim further to the west than I really wish to travel, but all in all this seems to suggest that I got raided by somebody who loved my munchies.

Given that there is a hostile person who knows the location of my camp and possesses both Larceny and Waste, what measures can I take to protect myself? I am far from being able to make braziers or any sort of active defense, and don't even have simple walls. Am I simply at the mercy of further raids? Should I move? Should I just gamble that I won't get pillaged again before I can make defenses? Leave a basket of food out as an offering of peace? Build a makeshift fence?

I am confused on how taking some simple food from a box not in the leanto on unclaimed land would leave a larceny track. I salvage items from abandoned claims all the time and dont have even the trespassing skill. Never have I gotten a debuff and dont imagine would leave any tracks either. Am I wrong?

I presume the containers were removed from where I had stowed them in my leanto. Doing this on a claimed leanto requires the Larceny skill, according to the wiki. The pilferer probably decided later to smash my humble dwelling "just in case".

Is there a mine on your claim? Because you'll probably not want to settle permanently until you find an abandoned one to build around, or prospect to find your own. If you're worried about a hostile neighbor, I can think of a few things you can do.

1 Find a new place to live, the writ doesn't cost all That much. And there are many abandoned bases out there for a new player to take over to get you a head start.

2 Don't build any walls and assume you're going to get robbed now and then, so don't keep anything valuable on your claim. Just use it as a temporary dwelling until you can build yourself up a bit and find a more permanent place. Log off with your valuables or give them to an alt.

3 If you're on Plymouth, there's always plenty of iron bars for sale in the stalls. Learn fence building and brazier forging and put up a stone wall and buy the iron for braziers. I'd do this if you have a mine but aren't quite ready to smelt.

4 Make an alt and pay your neighbor a visit with the alt. Maybe they'll be friendly. If they aren't, you've only lost the alt.

Maybe they wanted to point out to you, in their subtle way, that your stuff isn't safe - no matter what you had in the crates.
