How tightly should I protect my mine?

Is there any reason to build a wall around it or even claim it if I won't be storing anything inside?

You should, at least, put a claim down on it, or someone else may decide to, blocking you from using it.

For purity 0-10% just put a claim up, 11-20% claim and wall, any higher build a little miners paradise to protect it.
