The construction area doesn't have the building materials.

I see piles of wood everywhere, how do I make them. I gather a few branches, I've really been searching the forum for a old mans walkthrough because I'm just not getting it.

It also took over an hour searching to find out that you have to click the green bar when its full to level a proficiency, this is how slow i am :O.

You need to place materials in the construction sign. You can use mouse wheel to do this quickly.
If you have problems with basic gameplay I suggest you to look for guides on youtube.
