Artifice for dummies

Postby elidmw » Fri Jan 18, 2013 3:54 pm

Please explain me on an example, what do these phrases "Difficulty: A to B Proficiency1 ... ProficiencyN" mean.
For example: Etterfang Difficulty: 75 to 0 [Cloak & Dagger][Sugar & Spice]
What is the meaning of this formula?

If useful for illustration: Coonskin Cap as a unit with a slot has Difficulty 40 to 30 in [Cloak & Dagger][Frontier & Wilderness][Hunting & Gathering].

No-one really knows.

The best answer I can give is that if the proficiencies for the artifice and clothing match, and you have trained a high level in those proficiencies, you will have a better chance of success (the closer to the lowest difficulty number you will get). The lower the difficulty, the easier it is to apply. The higher the range between the two difficulty values of an item, the more difficult it is to place.

Do this applies to inspirationals only or not ? Does it mean that experience points gained from studying are now variable ?

The experience points will (most likely) remain the same. The only time they change is when you've already studied an inspirational of the same kind.
The artifice numbers and such are new to the game as of yesterday. Keep an eye on this thread http://forum.salemthegame.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3747 for info.
I can't say anything else on the topic as I don't understand how it works yet.

All i know is this.

Get your skills above the maximum required on all items, and you should never have a problem socketing.

Lets say, get everything to 75, and you should never really fail again.

Yes, this is the only thing that reveals what I should do now...
I just wanted to understand if my English is too bad to understand what developers have written or they have just written no real explanation of the mechanics. :)

Excluding the math.

What you can do to increase your chances of success when slotting items.

Choosing articife and clothing that have matched proficiencies is the only way to increase your chances of success. You can still choose items that don't match any proficiencies but they will be much harder to slot.

Understanding the difficulty range

Each artifice and slottable equipment has a "difficulty range". The actual probability of success is hidden in complex jorbian calculus. But to understand the range it's best to think of the numbers as hard to easy, the bigger the number the harder it is.
So a range of 75-0 has values ranging from very hard (75) to very easy (0)
The more you skill up your proficiencies, the more that will "push" the actual value downward towards 0 or very easy.
so if your proficiency is at 5 it will do very little to push the value toward the easy end.

This only applies when you have matching proficiencies in the artifice and equipment. Otherwise your chances of success is based on the hard end of the difficulty spectrum. it should therefore be the case that items that have no match will be equally hard to slot for a starting char and the most advanced chars.

Analysis of a Difficulty range.
75-0 this ranges from very difficult to very easy. when your proficiencies are low it will be extremely difficult to slot, but when your proficiencies are very high it can become very easy to slot.

40-30 this ranges form medium hard to medium easy. Notice this range does not go to zero meaning this item no matter how high you skill up your proficiencies will never be very easy to slot, but it also will never be extremely hard to slot.

20-5 this ranges from easy to very easy.

Thank you Bob!. I was still confused after reading 24 pages in the announcement thread. Your post clarifies the mechanic in very easy to understand language, with no math!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hmm...bob's post makes me realize that I'll need to revise the "Artifacts" page I just added to the wiki, since I appear to have gotten a few details wrong. I'll get to it....LATER!
