Snakes? Maps? Wood logs?

Postby fiveous » Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:29 pm

Hi, I got a few questions.

1. How to deal with snakes? My first encounter was near james town, I was new and just learnt the self defence skill and small game hunting.. I punched a snake in the face to test it out, and it appears the snake is good at dodging my attacks and keep attacking me from behind. I tried to outrun it but some a-holes tried to block my path so that I would stop moving and get bitten by the snake and eventually die and drop my loot (Which was empty).

2. I collected a few http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Singing%20Old%20Log Singing Old Logs and they seems to be good at increasing proficiencies but I have no idea to harvest? cut? whatever the word is. Just want to simply study it so I can get settlement skill fast and get a claim stone going.

3. Where can I find a map of Jamestown? A full working map, I need to locate my settlement then find the nearest grassland to collect those wild grass and make hay. I need a map cause I want to be sure Im headed to the right direction.

2. Old logs can be found in dark forests: http://salemwiki.info/index.php/Terrain ... Coniferous

avoiding snakes is prolly the best bet for you. they don't really making anything useful unless you want the snake skin stuff but finding those in logs is alot faster

I try to avoid them and I keep finding them and my proficiencies keep decreasing cause I keep getting knocked out, been playing for 6 hours and I'm going nowhere. My current goal is to get a claim stone so my friends can play with me and make a village or something.

Right click the item in your bag, or a container, and click the "Study" button that pops up.

As I mentioned in yourother thread, download and use Enders client. It will show snakes, and other creatures, on the minimap, and it will show them before you are in range to aggro them. Makes exploring much safer.

They can be found in either forest. (coniferous or autumnal)

It's been so long since I've seen an autumn forest. If I remember correctly they are a lot more common in the coniferous forest.

confir forests (heavy pine wooded areas with really nasty green/brown ground tiles) spawn singing logs like crack. i can literally pick up 16 singing logs in 15minutes without any skill buffs they spawn that much.

snakes are best fought near rivers or ocean where you can use backalley stomp to aoe kill them on the shoreline as snakes can not cross water.

Lots of people recommend Bullrun for dealing with snakes. Personally I find it fiddly trying to hit the snake instead of run past them, and I wasn't doing enough damage with it to one-shot a snake at starter humours and ended up poisoned anyway.

You can get Antivenom from the NPC stall in your Capitol. Alternately you may be able to find a player selling some at a cheaper price.

Don't fight snakes. If you just keep running away when one chases you it can never catch you. They travel faster but they have to stop when they try to bite, and in the time it takes them to do the attack you will have moved out of range. In this situation I recommend seeking shallow water or Rabbits. Snakes cannot swim, if you know what you're doing you can attack snakes from shallow water using an attack with a longer range than theirs. Rabbits attack snakes, so if you find a bunch of rabbits, run around them for a bit, and in a short while some of the rabbits will attack the snake. The cute bunnies will sacrifice themselves to save you. Many of the rabbits will die, afterwards you can skin them and eat them, along with the snake.
