I currently have 5.0 everything except for BB, which I have 7.0 of. I tried to hunt a cricket and was knocked out, which caused my hunting/gathering etc. levels to reset. It took forever to raise those and I don't want to lose them so I can get settling finally, and Sevenless' guide says to hunt rabbits to get Phlegm. My question is, would I be safe to hunt rabbits? Or would they kill me like the cricket did? Also, how do I fight? xD

Rabbits are harder than crickets, so no you would not be safe hunting rabbit.

Honestly, I would hold off on hunting critters until you have at least 10 Yellow Bile, and probably Blood around there too. You can raise both of them fairly easily on Lavender Blewits (Found in plains and in forests, they are a blue mushroom). I'd say use Shrooms-on-a-Stick, but you probably don't have Mushroom Hunting yet.
And a better food to start raising Phlegm with is Sizzled Slugs, since you don't have to kill anything to get the ingredients. Just takes a Virginian Snail and some form of fire.
Edit, in reply to Jinx: Rabbits are easier than Crickets. Crickets can one hit KO a character with 5 Blood - Rabbits hit for 3.
Also, you need Small Game Hunting to kill Rabbits or Crickets.
Without it I don't think you can even hit them, just make them angry enough to kill you. :p

Hmmm, my bad. I never paid much attention to either rabbit nor cricket early on. I always thought it was the other way around.

I need something specifically for blood as Lavender Blewits are a bit rare around where I am and I will just do sizzled slugs

Hmm. Berries-on-a-Straw are pretty easy to make, just needing berries and autumn grass, and the Foraging skill. Lobster Mushrooms are decent, too, but a little on the rare side.
What kind of biome do you live in?

Crickets only hit .2 with guard on, .5 off. Rabbits are about the same. If you mean full reel/imbalance, bears can hit upwards of 100 on someone with full reel/imbalance, dosen't mean you need 100+ to fight a bear.
Although it is advisable not to hunt small animals til 10ish biles just for times sake, it is enough to do with 5. Consult a hunting guide if you want to.

I actually forgot about guard, since I never use it.

Crickets also have double the hp of a rabbit, in addition to hitting slightly harder, so that's something for a new player to keep in mind.
Hunting for meat early on is pretty mediocre anyway, because you don't get a decent amount of meat from animals until you've learned the butchery-related skills.
For blood early on, berries on a straw are the best choice. Berries are all over the place, and, if you don't have any grassland around you, you can port to boston and gather grass around there.

I would like to say that Crickets and Rabbits are easy to hunt if you have Backalley Pugilism, and if you know how to use the skills gained with this, you could defeat both Rabbits and Crickets without having to increase your Humours... For example, I have all Humours at 7.0 and I don't have problems defeating those animals, and I'm a noob noob newbie here...
It's just a matter of knowing how to use skills
