It decayed that fast?

So I build an enclosure, seal and lock it, and build a few structures in it. Finally I erect a Smelter in the center. I smelt a few bars with it, then go to bed, planning on deeding the enclosure tomorrow.
I log in this evening to find the smelter GONE. All the other structures are there, and the gates are intact, so what gives? Do smelters really decay that quickly on un-deeded territory? And how could I have seen some indication that it was decaying so rapidly?

Seriously? My understanding is there is no "lockpicking" ability in the game yet. How did they get my locked gates open?

My walls and gates are intact, closed, and locked. Seriously, if someone figured out a way to bypass the gates, my hat's off to them. I wanna know how so I can do it to the next poor bastard.

Decay is some kind of random game mechanic. I have seen unclaimed buildings disappear before my very eyes.
Or somebody could have busted down your gate and then the smelter.

OK, that makes sense I suppose, in a weird way. People do that? bash a gate then fix it behind them? I guess that could mean they're logged out inside my compound. holy ambush, batman.

If you have a claim, or set one up, anyone logged out will not be able to log back in there. They will have to teleport to their homestead and lose all their items.

I know when i declaimed a claim and checked back a few days later all the smelters had gone. I think they just decay very quickly.
