The 'Best' Storage

What exactly would be ideal storage? Not just for protection, but for mass storage.

I tend to be a massive pack rat, and living in a forest seems to encourage the spamming of wooden boxes. I would do that for a lot of cheap mass storage, but I know that those can damage over time - is there storage that doesn't do that? For example, I've never personally used urns for storage (as they provide 1 less storage than boxes, I prefer the box layout, and boxes seem to be easier to make), but do they get damaged over time as well? If not, I would think I would prefer urns.

Also, higher end, is making things like a shed worth making? It's got really big storage, but it's quite expensive to make. Does it provide any extra protection, or would it simply be a good spot to have a lot of stuff in one place? And cupboards - I already know they are pretty fragile, so locking them is a bad idea on the chance that the raider decided not to break it - but same deal as the shed, would they be worth making for the size of the storage?

To end with, just a little bit of confirmation.. When using a iron or wooden chest, both can be locked, and must be broken to get any items from them once locked, correct?

Large Urn is more difficult to make but you can fit 2 or even 3 urns in a place you could only fit one wooden box. So that would be at minimum 28 slots against 15 from wooden box. I've read this sometime ago in the forums and since then I have urns all along the walls of my claim. It's my favorite storage, only made some chests to load on the sled.

To me the best practice is probably consume as you go. Storage for shorter periods if you have a goal to achieve fast, but avoid storaging crafted items, foods, just storage the raw stuff and craft when needed.

I think the shed is good if you want a fixed storage that can't be moved. Slot wise it's equivalent to 4.5 large urns.

The top 2 storage items are the cupboard (indoors) and the shed (outdoors) both of which store 64 items each.

As for decay, if the containers are on a claim they wont decay, otherwise like pretty much everything off claim, it will have random decay until they are gone.

This is the best and safest storage. beyond that, don't leave anything in your fort/base that you mind losing. Its a little less convenient than spamming wood boxes, or chests, but it's as safe as your alt acct.

yep and the great thing about alt banks, is you have an unlimited storage locker. each raw, can store 16 items(one moroe than a box) and you can make as many as you want, think i have like 12-13 now on mine and my daughters accounts. and from her account its even better, casue i can login my main, and then an alt on hers at the same time! so safe to trade stuff even in town if im careful. or at the homestead for the ones there.

although i did build my first shed today and i must say, WOW!! its inventory size is HUGE 64 slots, ill be doing all my combineing of stuff, and gluttony from it from now on lol

Sled + 4 chests.

Your all wrong.

Come see my house, which has 100 sleds in, holding 400 chests, holding a nice total of 10,000 items.

Fun times, was totally worth raiding all these sleds.

Alright, thanks everyone for the useful info. I didn't know that objects only decayed if they are off property - up until recently, I was practically a wanderer, using whatever I had at the time, so stuff got damaged since it wasn't on a claim, so that's very useful info.

I already knew about using alts as storage method, though I'm not a fan of it. Personally, I would prefer to risk storing stuff on my property than use an alt storage. Thanks anyway :D

The shed or the cupboards would be really nice for something like gluttony, otherwise, not too useful considering their cost to make. However, when using a sled with 4 chests, can you access all 4 chests at once? If so, that would be better than both sheds and cupboards.

Other than all that, the only other things to consider is if the storage is lockable, and the space vs cost to make. That's about all I needed to know, it's been very informative - Thanks again!

you can't use the item directly on the sled

people say it's not a good idea to lock storage because people will then break it to see what's inside, dunno about metal chests
