If you can only settle in/near one, which is better for a new player and why?

Personally, I've never seen a coniferous forest near where I am, and I'm wondering what I'm missing out on. (apparently turkeys?)

They are both good. Coniferous is probably better although don't discount the maple leaves and gourds.
Really you want more than 1 biome ideally. 1 Forest and 1 grasslands/badlands/savannah is good.

There are two types of forest, I am unsure what is which. I had believed that Kaol's forest was a pine forest.

But there are other differences.

Autumn
Chestnuts! (Great beginning food / inspir)
Has toadstools
Maple leaves
Gourds

Pine Forest(looks darker)
singing old logs(great way to level several skills as it has stats in the thousands)
Lavender blewits
huckleberries...
and yes, an asston of blackberry bushes(Having flowers and berries mean each bush tends to give 5[if not picked previously] or 2 if someone else picked the bush without the skill

Coniferous forest(looks a bit lightly with grass patches in it)
Toadstools all over
Witchhats all over
Milkweed all over
Lots of wild garlic(even though the wiki states garlic is only found in badland/grassland biomes)
It lacks any great inspirational randoms though

So really you cannot go wrong with either forest as one of your choosing biomes. However I find that the coniferous forest(may be incorrect of the name) is the best bet due solely to the amount of witchhats you can find. My stats are up to the 30s now and witch hats still are a stable food for me due to how easy it is to find via forage. Toadstools are also helpful in making good glutton foods for early-mid game. In Roankee there is a giant coniferous forest that stretches north/south 15-30 mins west of boston.

Pine Forest/Coniferous Forest/Dark Forest are all names for the same biome. A Conifer is so named because it bears cones. A Pine is a Conifer. It's sometimes called "Dark Forest" because it is a dark colour on the mini-map but i don't like this term because it gets mistaken for "Forest that is in the darkness". You also get chestnuts in this forest.

The brown patched area with loads of witches hats is what i called savannah, it has autumn grass and much less trees so i am not sure if it is truly a forest biome, it's abit like a cross between grassland and forest.

Autumnal Forest is the puke coloured forest with the maple trees everywhere.

Grass is quite useful for alot of recipes/buildings so having acess to a grassland biome is useful even if its just a few patches in a forest. You can get some from Boston too but this is scare in active times.

Oak savannah (the only real savannah in NA) is bright green. I've always called what you're referring to as a "marsh", but thinking about it there's a large amount of similarity to the Pine Bog biome of northern altitudes in Canada. That's likely what it's being modeled after.

I call that a marsh just like Sevenless does. As Kaol said, what you're calling a pine forest is a coniferous forest. I also noticed you mentioned chestnuts in your list for autumnal, those are also all over the place in a coniferous. Same with bears for that matter, I've found them in both autumnal and coniferous. The only thing that coniferous has that autumnal doesn't is blewits. Things autumnal has that coniferous doesn't are maple leaves, gourds, and garlic. The marsh biome is amazing for garlic and grass, it's too bad milkweed isn't more useful. I currently live on the edge of a coniferous and a marsh. I don't miss anything from the autumnal since I can get maple leaves out in the marsh and no longer need gourds. I still have to go hunting in an actual grassland when I need oakworth and devil's wort but I just go to Roanoke for those.

Coniferous has thorn bushes. Also, more bear spawns.

Yep, forgot about the thorn bushes.

And don't forget turkeys (primarily the creature, but some characters living there may qualify as well).
