Biomes

I'll begin by saying that I am not entirely a noob, I have a character in the Jamestown server that is thriving, however I lucked out enough to have been given my free warp to an amazing spot on the edge of a big forest and grassland, with a mining spot not too far away. Here's my question....
I started a second character on the Boston server and decided to just walk out from Boston straight north in an attempt to find the darkness. I am not going to set up camp until I have prospecting but I want it to be a good area. In my hours of traveling I have only found one decent sized biome other than grassland, with a tiny autumn biomes (one mimimap max) sprinkled in. So after all that here is my question.... where are all the forest at? Is it even important that you are near atleast two biomes or is grassland all you really need? I know that you can always substitute one food with another or one curiousity with another.

Ello. There is a great page stickied in the Help forums called "Useful links & Such." You'll find there a bit of very useful links including a world map. This is Plymouth/Boston's world map. It will help you find an area that you might enjoy. Here's the link to the map:

http://ad.lylay.com/hts/smap.htmlThis is Plymouth map. They used the same generator maybe with some tweaks for james and roa. As you can see, the biomes are massive so you've really just been wandering in one big grassland.
It seems to work off a North/South line though, wandering straight east/west has a better chance of finding new biomes for you because of that.

Thanks for the map, but what about the second part of my question?
If I find a mining node and the only thing around is grassland, given that there is water close by, is this fine or should I keep looking for a mining node that is near grassland and forest/autumn?

I personally like having a forest, grasslands and water/beach near me. That way you have access to all the foragables. I would look for a mine near several resources. There are tons of mines of lower purity so I personally would keep looking. It all depends on what you are looking for, but don't settle, find what you need.

Find the big forest + big grass + water as a bear minimum at first. Then look for a mine near there. Mines < Better foraging for a hermit type.

If I had to settle for less than the ideal, I would count on being able to port to/from Boston for grassland forage and go for a variety of forests with a small amount of grassland, clay and stone quarries, and water. At the moment, wood and granite boulders seem to be the resources I have to conserve (wood because it is too easy to deforest my local area and granite because I seem to be going farther and farther from home to find the next available one) and a good variety of forests is handy for finding them as well as useful forage.

I dislike boston foraging personally, but I can buy that argument. I really disagree about clay quarries though, it's pretty easy to make with a clay trough I find. One piece of lime per 10 clay is a nice enough ratio that you can forage it.
Water and lots of Forest are definite musts though I'll agree.

My bad, I meant lime.

So what do you think the chances are of finding a suitable mining spot that has all these things into consideration. I'm going to have to agree that a spot with sparce trees and boulders can be a hassel in the future. But I also agree with Sevenless that traveling to Boston everytime you needs forageables from grasslands can be a pain too.
