Noob in Boston

Postby Monohan » Mon Dec 03, 2012 10:29 pm

I just started a new character, I have one going in the Jamestown server but wanted to try my luck again, i'm wondering if it was a bad idea making one in the original server as i seem to see a lot of dead bodies in my travels

The area around Boston can be very dangerous. I AM THAT PERSON THAT WILL HARM YOU. However the wilderness port might buy you some time as well.

Recruitment (of any kind) should be saved for the recruitment forums, simply linking them is sufficient.

Point being: This is a person trying to escape from all murderers, not just Chief's group. Telling someone to live on the reservation only makes them safe from the MM tribe. If anything it makes other raider groups target them more (whether said raiders exist now, or in the future). The post below gives a good example of the best way to avoid being raided.

To OP. And most importantly, ask yourself this:

Would you trust an Indian with an axe?

what if i attempt to settle close to the darkness, would that be safer or is that where most the griefers are?

Unfortunately, as a new character you won't have the luxury of setting up a camp in the Darkness due to having low humours to start. There is an argument that the further you are from Boston the safer you are and in terms of being murdered I would wager that is very true. In terms of having your city burned to the ground not so much. Unfortunately, the only balanced mechanic for defending your city at this time (The Darkness) that made raiding hard on the raiders has been nerfed. Therefore, anywhere you now place your base is pretty much as easily seiged as anywhere else.

At this stage your goal should be to get humours up as fast as possible and prof. Then from there when you can quickly and less painfully "re-establish" a base I would encourage you to spend a good weekend exploring the most aggrivating and difficult to reach areas of the map (hills, lakes, mountains). Everytime you come to a fork in the road with an easy way to go and a hard way continue to take the hard way. At the end of that weekend you are hopefully down a path that very few will travel and have probably done all you can do to mitigate raiding.

I think it's also worth noting that to avoid being deaded AFKing should only ever be done in boston, you should have 3 walls and lotso braziers, you should try to live *at least* a two hour walk away from boston, and you should do your best to minimize the damage of being raided.

Getting raided is only an issue if your entire base gets wiped out and/or you get killed. If you see raiders, just let them take what they want and log off. Your character and your industry base are more important.
It's been neat to see the evolution of a game. Salem has come so far, and still has far to go. Although frustrating, I think it's been an experience worth the effort.
