Can't Put anything in compost box

Trying to start up on agriculture and I can't put anything in the compost box I just built. I've tried mushrooms, autumn grass, meat shreds, worms, dead crickets, wood chippings, etc. Is there some special requirement I haven't met yet?

pick up what you want to put in and right click

I've already tried that, doesn't work either. Though I don't understand why that would be a requirement considering everything else uses left clicking to move objects.

Alright I'm an idiot apparently, but they really shouldn't have it open up a giant window with a bunch of empty squares if you aren't supposed to place compost into it that changes into humus after a timer like limed hides in a tanning tub for example.

If you pick something up and left click, you're just going to drop it on the ground. In order to load materials into anything, it's left click to pick it up, right click the thing it's going into.

Are you trying to load the stuff into the slots that you see when you open the compost bin? If so, that's where you're going wrong. You just pick the item up and then right click on the container itself. The slots are where your humus will appear as it's produced.

I see you figured it out as I was posting that.

Also, something I didnt know about until a while after playing... If you have lots of the same types of items (eg charcoal, food stuffs) you want to load into a structure/object (eg: smelter, compost bin, turkey coop) you can pick up (left click) one of the items and hold shift and right click the structures, it will then take the items one by one directly from your inventory.

Yep, just be careful and pay attention to what's on the end of your cursor, especially for things like compost bins and turkey coops that will hold a variety of items, because you can end up loading in things you didn't mean to.

You have a great point there, but how else would you get the humus out? ;)

Think of it more as feeding fuel into the structure. It then functions identically as every other building in the game that has to be "fueled" somehow--tanning tubs, smelters, ovens, etc. It's one of the idiosyncrasies we've all learned to use.

Also note that this is similar to the way the cooking, pottery, smelting, etc. interfaces work. Of course in most cases you have fuel that goes in like the junk for the compost pile and you can add stuff to the main window that is manipulated by the structure (this is just a special case that has not stuff to be manipulated).
