I don't think anything bad happens to it if it's left on its own. Although I guess that other players (raiders) might want to harvest it. But I guess that's a risk with everything you have if you leave the game for that long

Yes, players can enter your homestead, even when it's claimed. They just need some extra skills to do that. Then they can take all items and destroy everything else.
Items you have stored on your character, as well as the character, are safe when it's logged out. Provided that you didn't commit any criminal acts of course.
Your account will not be deleted.

You can also create seemingly unlimited alt characters to store things on

Hi there. re: timber piles. How do I know when its ready? I have one built but when I right-click on it there is no popup or other indicator. Do they change color? And when they are ready, will right-clicking on it harvest the entire pile?

Some people say the pile changes color; however, if it does it's too subtle for me. It will let you right click and start taking boards off (no menu, IIRC) in the same fashion as the coal clamp lets you harvest coal -- and it will keep on giving you boards until you move away or otherwise make it stop.

Along this same thread of thought, what are moldy boards used for? Can a moldy board be used in place of a plain board (not dry board)? Wiki has no info and I may not have skills that require it yet, so I don't know.

Mouldy boards have no use other than to split into wood chippings, which can be used to fill compost bins, turkey coops or to reduce upkeep on farming fields.
