How to know homestead secret?

My brother I started playing about a week ago. He had a homestead that be both really liked, but a few days ago he logged on and his leanto was gone. (assuming someone destroyed it?) And making matters worse, he got instantly poisoned by a snake upon logging in. He got KO'ed shortly after, and without a homestead, he couldn't port to home after waking up. The past 4 days we've been walking all around the map looking for the location to no avail.
So I was wondering, is the homestead secret kept somewhere within the game for each player? Is there a way to find out what it was? We don't remember what exactly he put as the secret, but we've given up and were wondering if there is any way we would be able to locate his homestead.

Can't help you on locating your homestead, but your homestead secret is saved on the Kin list - Ctrl-B is the hotkey to open this, I believe.

The homestead secret doesn't help you get back to your homestead if you are lost. It is used as one way of creating a kin relationship between characters and to allow new characters (who haven't used their free port to wilderness) to port to your claim (it only works if you have a claim established, not just a lean-to plopped down in the wilds).
I think your best bet is to head out into the wilds together looking for a new place (which may well end up being better than the old place). Assuming you are both established characters, you probably need to do the wandering together and will both need the

Creating a string of lean-tos as you wander is a good idea, making the new lean-tos your homestead (right click) each time you are sure you are heading in a good direction since this gives you access to boston to sell all those savage charms you will be collecting.

I thought the same homestead secrets from the wilderness guide port you to the same general location? And the kin list has a spot to enter your homestead secret to remember it, put he never entered it.

Your homestead secret is something you make up on your own, and put in the kin list so people can friend you, port to you with their free port in town, and otherwise contact you. Your own homestead secret isn't something that's given to you by anyone. Think of it like a password you give to your friends so they can contact you.

If you have a screenshot some of us who play way too much could probably point you in the right direction... but would be careful who you trust.... Did you guys have a claim placed down? The lean-to might have just decayed if you didn't.

No screenshots unfortunately. And yes, his leanto was claimed. Unless you mean the claim that cost 150 silver? If so, then no he didn't have that.

Yes, that is the claim we are talking about -- requires more skills than just putting up an new lean-to.

So claimed leantos decay? It would make more sense for unclaimed leantos to decay, but If I'm using it as my home it shouldn't decay. Although I'm assuming it's so leantos don't hang around when people quit the game. If that's the case, the leantos should decay if the owner doesn't log on for over a month.
Also, he was only there for 2 days at most. Why would it decay so fast?
