Bunnies and critters - cant hit em o.O

Been running around trying to hit anything rabbits, bear, beavers,snakes,deers, woosh air! my avatar just swings and hits air never ever hit them what do i need to actually be able to hit them only got self-defense right now and its never hitting ability
