I cannot seem to use a lock on my house door, why is this? Am I doing it wrong? I appologize if I'm simply an idiot

Houses can't be locked, only gates and chests and cabinets, though it's not really a good idea to lock a cabinet since a raider will just break it open. Build a fence around your property and lock the gate. :)

oh, that's bloody stupid if you can't lock your house. Seems like a liability to have a house then, because people can just go in it to avoid the torch-fire

Yeah, that's pretty much how I understand it too. But maybe someone more experienced with the game than I can shed some light on that subject.

Yes/no. Houses (with the new biggest ones now available) provide additional space/tile they sit on due to multiple floors. Furthermore, you can (as a defender) block someone inside a house by walking an alt into it. If they ko the alt, they can't leave and will be koed themselves inside of it by claim drain. Otherwise the alt blocks them in. You could also block the outside off with junk while they're in there. Don't forget they give access to stove based recipes you can't get otherwise.

Generally speaking, if they can bust the walls down your braziers at that point are simply for personal defense. They will get what they want if they have it by breaking the braziers if need be unless your defense is incredibly good (and therefore time consuming to make in the first place). But if you're running around your base from an attacker, braziers are damn helpful and should force them to back off or KO before you die if you don't let yourself get cornered.

Hmm, now I am wondering...

I thought that in addition to possibly preventing them from breaking down the wall, the brazier will also limit how much gratuitous vandalism they will do the the property (I expect if they get in, they will find your best stuff to steal first before they need to exit). Is this not the case?

I am also assuming that, unless I am so unlucky as to log into the game in the middle of a raid or have fallen asleep with my face on the keyboard, by the time the walls are down, I am in Boston.
