I'm wondering if the shadows change position or are always at the same direction? If not it could be useful for guidance

Yes, you can use them for guidance. They begin the change a bit when you get into/near the darkness, but not enough to lose your way if you're using them like a compass.

They always point north.

I made some tests, the results were not encouraging. I'm sticking with landmarks for now.
