does it breed more butterflies...or do i just have to catch em? also does more in the Butterfly Conservatory increase the effectiveness or can i just put a single butterfly in there?

You need to catch or hatch the butterflies, they do not breed. The effectiveness increases with each unique butterfly, so you need one of each type to get to the maximum efficiency.
