What was the hardest Salem-related concept or mechanic for you to understand when you started playing? What are some of the more common misconceptions or mistakes new players make? Preferably, speak from your own experiences as a new player.

for me
1. Meet the wrong/tard players :P and trust they... :) but is possible meet cool players :)
2. The wrong way is made a one character (main) with this a game
3. [about pclaim/ptown] dont build closing spot minerals (if you cant cover with walls) like river/lake or clay spot/lime spot etc. because you lose space :D

Most common mistake is how new players perceive this game.
It's a marathon, not a sprint.

Don't hunt or walk around near providence. That area is frequently checked by murderers and they will most likely kill you.

The toughest concept for me was learning how the different aspects of Farming and tiered fields worked. Second toughest was Gluttony, but it was a LOT different back then, I think it's a bit easier now.

the rendering code, definitely the rendering code ¦]

On a serious note, probably the way defenses can be screwed up so easily if you don't know what you're doing (or if you do and don't think it through).
