Best program to design a base with? Could use tips on it too

My first base turned out kinda...bad because I just winged it and I was completely new. I want to make a new base somewhere new on another character that I can use as a more permanent main base.
Any real preferences? Any good freeware? What are some common pitfalls in base design I should be aware of?

Yeah, I always just make my excel cells square and then make colored blocks for all the things.

i always end up just using paint.NET or similar for this kind of thing. That ANNO is preferable, but then someone would have to create the building templates

This ... but beware, you can end up going into dreamland and designing fantastically complex spaces that you will never do, when you should be spending that time building

Excel + keep in mind the necessary spaces between structures.
