How do mysterious lilypads work exactly? I want to get a few, but I'm not really wanting to sink my silver into something I don't understand only to find that they don't do what I need them to do.
What I want to know specifically is, can I build on top of them or place dirt on them after they are placed in the water?

you build directly on top of them after placing - they count as pavement as far as I am aware.

Damn, thanks. I was hoping I could raise the level of the ground to match the land next to the river.
