What am I doing wrong... I can make pig iron and i understand that concept fully. I can make wrought iron and i fully understand that. I can also easily make blister coffins, but i just keep failing.. Granted i have only done it 3 times but they all took a week. Am I doing something wrong or is it just that getting blister steel isn't really difficult, but as easy to attempt a lottery yet as difficult to win it.

Blister always takes exactly 7 days, that is server time, so downtime adds to that.
- fuel them once a day to full
- dont let them stay in the furnance after they are done, you got just a few hours here (!) <= that is the most important part
- once they are out, there is no special care needed for letting them cool and so on
- as JC said, due to the work and materials involved, there is no RNG in this if you make it right

So essentially, if you want to make steel, you need to be there for a full week at least once a day, also try to plan ahead that they finish at a time where you can take them out.
Also Latikais timers ftw!

it doesn't matter if furnance runs out of fule (or it didn't)
the process takes exactly 7 days!
but if you leave it more than 4h in a light furnance after it finished, you only get dross

Is there any difference to put coffins in cold or already lighted furnace?

i don't think so: i typically put the coffins in my furnaces as I am making them (read: as i am tanning leather for them), and only lighting all of them at once when they are all filled. I've had no failed runs yet. I just make sure to time it so that i can take them out of the furnace within an hour or two once they finish.

One more advice...
Do not take out blister coffins while on cricket. Or do it if you want to make your life harder xD
