I dont really know what to do after I am in the first area. Im keen to join a village and grow more in the game.

Well its a sandbox so there isn't any sort of set progression. You should look at whats in game and set goals to acheive. Most villages wont recruit a fresh off the boat newbie. Get out there and explore, bile and gain skills. Find a nice place to settle and build a little camp for yourself.
