I think it was just for effect while the fight was going on. I left and went back home to hide.....

Yea it's just a gloomy atmosphere often summoned by GMs during events.

On many Sundays the town hosts different events - fights, races, etc. If you are online you will see a small box pop up that tells you a certain thing is going to happen in XX minutes and the location in town - dock, stocks, etc.

There are irregular announcements in the forum as well, but they do not seem to be done as reliably as the ingame message.

If you are not online at the time, you will not have any message, they only appear to online players. Same sort of message box as that which announces server shutdown for updates.
