I will give it a shot.
First you start with your leanto you are capable of keeping two containers (reed basket, hay basket, wooden box, and ect) inside your leanto. Someone can still steal these items but it will leave a scent that you may possibly be able to get some revenge over.
Second you will want to save your money for a personal claim which is 150 silver (this is bought at the white stall vendor and built with the "stake claim" structure). Any items within the claim area will require yet again crime leaving a scent if someone tries to steal them.
As you personal claim grows you may put up walls torch posts and braziers to protect the items on your base. People will have to put forth more effort to take your stuff.
When you claim gets larger you may also put a lock on the house on your land and chests leaving your items inside. This is still not full proof is someone puts the effort in they can still steal your belongings by destroying the house and/or the boxes. It is important to note that locks do not stop everything.
You need to keep your claims (personal claim or town claims) paid with some silver and your defenses of walls and braziers up.
